Blue Light Therapy

Blue Light Treatment for Acne: A painless and effective way to treat acne

Boston Acne Specialists is proud to offer blue light acne treatment in greater Boston area. Blue light acne treatment is an FDA-approved light treatment used to treat active acne and prevent future acne flares. This is a painless in-office procedure that can be used independently or in combination with other treatments. Blue light therapy for acne uses blue light to kill the acne-causing bacteria on your skin. This process often works to get rid of acne more quickly than prescription medications alone. Our offices are equipped with special rooms designated for blue light acne treatment. Many of our patients relax and rest during their sessions.

How does blue light therapy work?

When you arrive in the office for blue light acne therapy in our greater Boston  clinic, a blue light lamp is focused directly on the clean skin for a specific amount of time. Blue light targets and destroys the p. acnes bacteria that can cause acne, leading to a decrease in active acne and prevention of future acne. The treatment is safe and pain-free and most patients find it to be quite relaxing. Blue light acne therapy is sometimes combined with red light therapy, in order to further decrease inflammation.

Is there any downtime after this acne treatment?

There is absolutely no downtime following blue light acne therapy. The treatment itself is painless; most patients listen to music or take a quick nap during the procedure. Following the visit, you may continue your regular skincare routine and apply makeup, if you wish, immediately following your 30-minute appointment.

Can patients with dark skin types undergo light treatment for acne?

Both blue and red light treatments are LEDs (light emitting diodes) that do not contain UV (ultra violet) light. These LEDs are safe for all skin types; you may even have blue/red light treatments during pregnancy. Many patients with darker skin types find that blue light acne therapy is an excellent way to treat their acne safely and more aggressively than with prescription medications alone.
